BoardVitals NEW Mobile App and Updated Step 1 Qbank
By: LifeofaMedStudent
As a longtime Sponsor of #LifeofaMedStudent, BoardVitals keeps me up-to-date with their new products geared toward Medical Students. Today, I’m going to discuss two new developments from the BoardVitals team that are pretty exciting for the world of medical education – their NEW Mobile App and Updated Step 1 Qbank.
To start, I’ve been a fan of BoardVitals for a long time now. I reviewed their Anesthesiology Qbank back when it helped me pass my Anesthesia Boards in 2017. Just last year I reviewed their CME Pro Plus Plan, which was a great way to maximize the CME stipend in my attending contract. Now I’m pleased to be able to recommend their awesome new mobile app!
The NEW BoardVitals Mobile App:
Anywhere, Any Time!
I got a sneak peek at the new mobile app earlier this year to use with the CME Qbank I choose with their CME Pro Plus plan. Wow, is it slick!
First, the most important point is that the new app strongly supports the features I find most important in a mobile question bank. Easy function, quick setup, and portability! I want to be able to quickly and efficiently go through questions in any amount of downtime. I want to maximize my learning in those sometimes brief opportunites, but with all the features of full computer access.
For me, this is a few questions here and there in between OR cases, or longer study sessions waiting around on call. I already knew BoardVitals had top-notch study questions (more on that below), but the smooth features of the new app are where BoardVitals really shines with this new release!
There are several options for setting up quizzes, my favorite for the mobile app on the go is the untimed Study Mode. This allows you to answer and review results one question at a time, easiest if you aren’t sure how many questions you might be able to get through. There is also Test Mode (no results until the end) with Timed and Untimed options, for when you are more interested in a formal study session.
But what if you get assigned to the corner basement OR or end up in any other spot without Wifi signal?? No problem!! You can download quizzes ahead of time and sync your progress/results whenever you have internet again.
Want to see how you are performing compared to others and yourself over time? BoardVitals has great features such as peer ranking (to see how you are doing overall) and individual question comparisons (to see what percentage of peers responded to each possible answer choice). Likewise, there is a great personal performance timeline so you can easily track your own study progress and improvement. Again, all available on their new mobile app!
Lastly, the app has many of the features common to standard board exams (but rarely on your smartphone) such as:
- Highlight and strike-out ability in stem and answer choices.
- Marking a question for review later.
- A note-taking ability for specific questions and later review.
- Easy access to pull up lab values and calculator without leaving the app.
- Option to submit question feedback to the BV team.

Updated BoardVitals Step 1 Qbank
While it’s been a long time since I did any Step 1 studying (2011, gasp!), I do want to highlight some of the improvements in the already great BoardVitals Qbank. For starters, the number of questions has been expanded, now up to over 2750 unique Step 1 questions formulated to closely mirror the content of the actual exam. The explanations for right/wrong answers have also been enhanced, now more in-depth, with more features, than ever before. There are even mnemonics included for high-yield topics, something medical students frequently love as an educational tool.
The visual aids for questions and explanations have also been updated to better explain important concepts, as well as more radiographic and pathologic images to make sure you are ready for anything on exam day.
My favorite new feature is the “Vital Concepts” section of explanations – a quick paragraph sized synopsis of the key teaching points for each question. This quickly and easily allows a learner to make sure they are grabbing the highest yield learning points for each concept and knowledge area.
Lastly, BoardVitals has also included a great feature with some of their study plans called “Ask a Clinician.” This allows you to reach out for more clarification on a topic of interest or personal struggle and get an actual reply from a real medical editor. How fantastic is that?!
With nearly 3000 questions paired some of the most robust explanations and resources in the medical education industry, it’s no wonder BoardVitals offers a 100% Pass Guarantee with study plans. Having used their products at multiple stages of my education, I’m happy to be able to direct #LifeofaMedStudent followers to their new mobile app and can highly recommend their updated Step 1 Qbank!
