How to Beat the Spread of Misinformation and Unreliable Sources of Medical Information

By: Merck Manuals

Access to reliable, trustworthy medical information is a universal right. It empowers patients to make better-informed decisions about their health and enables better conversations between healthcare providers and patients. This has never felt so important as it does today in our world where questionable resources and unsubstantiated information are being consumed at alarming rates.

In 2015, The Merck Manuals had a mission, called Global Medical Knowledge 2020, to make our free, trustworthy medical information accessible to over 3 billion people by 2020. We are pleased to announce that we achieved our goal by being available worldwide in 12 of the most widely spoken languages. But we know there is still a need. Our work is not done.

Building on the success of Global Medical Knowledge 2020, we are declaring October 15 to be Global Medical Knowledge Awareness (GMK) Day. GMK Awareness Day is a call for all healthcare professionals, healthcare professional students, and consumers to celebrate and promote the power of reliable medical information. Please join us in celebrating our first GMK Awareness Day by sharing our mission.

Here’s how:

  • Follow #GMKAwarenessDay on social media and share why medical knowledge is important to you and the work you do.
  • Share our messages to your Insta or Facebook stories. Add our Global Medical Knowledge stickers by searching “Merck Manuals” in the Gif category.
  • On Facebook, add our custom frame to your profile photo. It will help spread awareness about our mission and show your support. Simple search Merck Manuals here.
  • Keep sharing trustworthy medical information with your communities. People will and are looking to you for direction and guidance during these uncertain times.

Medical knowledge is power. Pass it on by visiting and sharing MerckManuals.com with colleagues and patients.

Merck Manual:

The Merck Manual is a free, online medical reference. As the best first place to refresh your knowledge on the standard of care, the Merck Manual is also offered in a consumer version to help improve communication and health outcomes with your patients.

Though the Merck Manuals has been in publication since 1899, they’ve changed and improved the ways health care professionals are able to access their free medical information. This year, they’ve updated and improved several features of their free website.
